NYCC Receives Achievement Awards for Korean Youth Organization
Councilmember Gomez Presents Awards to 50 Students
Launched with 13 Students Two Years Ago… Currently Over 150 Students
Volunteering Through Talents in Art, Coding, and More
Approximately 60 students from NYCC (National Youth Community Center, Director Julia Jeong), a Korean youth volunteer organization launched two years ago, have received awards for their service from the federal and Los Angeles city governments.
On the 20th, NYCC held its third annual meeting at the Korean Education Center in Los Angeles to reflect on its growth and recognize outstanding students. Approximately 200 people, including students, parents, and organization officials, attended the event.
Congressmember Jimmy Gomez (District 34) was also present to offer his congratulations, present a Certificate of Recognition to NYCC, and personally present awards to 50 students who distinguished themselves in the organization’s volunteer clubs.
Congresswoman Gomez said, “NYCC has been working to empower young people to make an impact on society, including by providing STEM education to children from single-parent, low-income, and refugee families. I thank NYCC for their tireless dedication to the community despite the challenges of the pandemic.”
Furthermore, six students who participated in the environmental science project received awards from the office of Los Angeles City Councilmember Nidia Rahman (District 4), and five 12th graders received special recognition from the Mayor of Los Angeles.
Established in March 2022, NYCC aims to provide equal learning opportunities and foster talent for all students, including gifted students, low-income students, refugees, and single-parent students.
At the time of its founding, NYCC was sometimes misunderstood due to its similar name to the Koreatown Youth Center (KYCC), which was already deeply rooted in LA’s Koreatown.
However, with its initial membership of 13 students now reaching 150, NYCC has earned the trust of parents as a model organization.
NYCC partners with various organizations to help students engage in volunteer activities tailored to their majors and interests. It is the first student-focused volunteer organization where students can create their own clubs based on their interests.
Currently, NYCC operates 18 clubs, including Math+Stem, coding, 3D printing, art, music, environmental education, web design, politics, business marketing/fundraising, and TED Talks, a gateway to student speaking. Seo Yu-ran, Director of Boston Education, a NYCC partner, explained, “Volunteering unrelated to a major doesn’t have much impact on college admissions. For example, if a student majors in art, volunteering at a senior center can help students connect with their future majors. This approach aligns with the current college admissions trend, which prioritizes social contribution. It also helps students understand the true meaning of volunteering through the donation of their talents.” NYCC partners with Boston Education, Hayfield School of Music, Ariari21, the Boy Scouts of Korea, the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, and the Salvation Army.

미술·코딩 등 재능 살려 봉사
2년전 출범한 한인 청소년 봉사단체 ‘NYCC(National Youth Community Center·대표 줄리아 정)’ 학생 60여명 이 연방 및 LA시 정부로부터 봉사상 등을 받았다.
NYCC는 지난 20일 LA한국교육원에서 제3회 연례 미팅을 개최하며 그간의 성장을 돌아보고 우수 학생들에게 시 했다. 행사에는 학생과 학부모, 단체 관계자 등 약 200명이 참석했다.
이날 지미 고메즈 연방하원의원(34지구)도 자리해 축하의 말을 전하는 한편, NYCC에 공로장(Certificate of recognition)을 전달하고 단체 산하 봉사 클럽에서 두각을 보인 학생 총 50명에게 봉사상을 직접 시상했다.
고메즈 하원의원은 “NYCC는 편부모·저소득·난민 가정 자녀들에게 STEM 교육을 제공해오는 등 청소년들이 지 사회에 영향력을 끼칠 수 있도록 일해왔다”며 “팬데믹의 어려움에도 불구하고 커뮤니티에 끊임없이 헌신해온 NYCC에게 감사의 인사를 전한다”고 전했다.
이밖에도 이날 LA시 니디아 라만 시의원(4지구) 사무실로부터 환경과학 프로젝트에 참여한 학생 6명이 상을 받았고 , 12학년 5명이 LA시장 특별 표창장을 수여했다.
NYCC는 지난 2022년 3월, 우수한 영재 학생들 뿐만 아니라 저소득 및 난민, 편부모 학생 등 모든 학생들에게 평등 배움의 기회를 제공하고 인재를 양성하는 취지로 설립됐다.
NYCC는 설립 당시 LA한인타운에서 이미 깊게 뿌리 내리고 있는 ‘한인타운청소년회관(KYCC)’과 이름이 비슷해 오해를 받기도 했다.
하지만 초창기 13명이었던 학생 회원 수는 이제 150명에 달할 정도로 학부모들 사이에서 모범 단체로 신뢰를 얻고 있다.
NYCC는 여러 기관들이 함께 협력파트너를 맺고 학생의 전공과 관심사에 맞는 봉사활동들을 하도록 돕고 있다. 학생이 관심 있는 분야를 직접 클럽으로 만들 수도 있는 최초의 학생 맞춤 봉사단체다.
현재 NYCC 산하에는 Math+Stem, 코딩, 3D프린팅, 아트, 뮤직, 환경 오염 교육, 웹 디자인, 정치, 비즈니스 마케팅/ 펀드레이징, 학생 연설 등용문인 TED톡 등 총 18개 클럽이 운영되고 있다. NYCC의 협력파트너 ‘보스턴 에듀 이션’의 서유란 실장은 “전공과 상관없는 봉사활동은 대학 진학에도 큰 의미가 없다”며 “미술 전공을 원한다면 노인회관에서 그림을 가르쳐주는 봉사를 하는 등 미래 전공과 연계된 봉사활동을 통해 사회 기여도를 중요하게 보는 요즘 대학 입시 트렌드에 맞추고, 또한 학생들에게 재능 기부를 통한 봉사의 참 의미를 알도록 돕고 있다”고 설명 했다.
NYCC는 보스턴 에듀케이션을 비롯해 헤이필드 음악학교, 아리아리21, 보이스카웃, 평통, 구세군 등과 협력파트러로 함께 한다.
